Lonely China Day

Submitted by jay on 5 February, 2007 - 17:32

From Beijing's independent music scene comes Lonely China Day, a superbly good band that mixes elements of atmospheric rock with electronic loops and smaller samples. Have a listen to One from the Tag Team Records site. While you're there, listen to Sorrow as well, the song that also lends the album its title.

I heard King of Lonedom by Arrows Made of Desire while in a record store in Beijing, which is what put me on to the label in the first place. The shop's entire indie music collection consisted of Lonely China Day and Arrows made of Desire. It was the same in the few other music shops I visited...

I'm also intrigued by the now defunct Submissionaries, hailing from Sweden "a serious mixed bag of Canadians, Yanks, Swedes and Danes" who are/were also on the label. Give their stuff a listen too, down at the very bottom of the downloads page.

Of the two China Lonely Day

Of the two Lonely China Day tunes, One is more accessible. Arrows Made of Desire has all the right stuff to be a good indie folk / pop band. They just need to expand the lyrical content somewhat. Considering that they are probably trying to overcome a language and cultural barrier, King of Lonedom is pretty good.

Minor Points

Hi, I actually work for tag team here in Beijing and I though I'd drop a comment.

Thanks for the mention of LCD. Any mention is a good mention etc.

Firstly thought you might like to know that LCD are currently on tour in the states [along with Rebuilding the Rights of Statues]. Don't know where you are, but as long as you don't live on the west coast they pmight well be playing a dive near you right now. Check out the website www.tagteamrecords.com for all the details.

Arrows Made of Desire is essentially joewi Verhoeven, who is half dutch/half chinese. No language barrier, his english is probably better than mine, albeit with a damnable yankee accent.

Yes, the submissionaries are much missed, especially by those of us who got to see their gloriously messy gigs. However, they were not Swedish. They were a serious mixed bag of Canadians, Yanks, Swedes and Danes. But they really did rock!

Well hello

Wow, hi Ian, amazing that you tracked me to this little corner of the intarweb. I'll update the post to reflect your much more knowledgeable perspective, thanks.

Alas, being in Toronto makes checking out LCD a difficult proposition. But the next time I'm in Beijing...

Oh, and I also know a local promoter/producer who knows the Toronto scene pretty well, hint hint, Canada leg of the next tour ;) ???

Lonely China Day - Sorrow - out soon in US/Canada!

hi jay,

even in toronto, you can now look forward to lonely china day's newest album 'sorrow' which will be released in north-america (US & Canada) July 24!
