This Sunday: The Miracle Channel

Did you know that Canada has its very own Evangelical television channel? I suppose that us folks in the Eastern part of the country could be excused if we haven’t discovered the Lethbridge, Alberta based Miracle Channel. But wait, here's a testimonial from a viewer in Ontario:

I am really impressed with the quality of your programming. It is very professional but not flashy or showy. It is so nice to hear what God is doing in Canada. I also enjoy discovering Canadian ministries. I have learnt so much watching your programs and have certainly being challenged in my walk with God. I especially enjoy LifeLine and the call-in program. It is very professional and non-confrontational and he addresses current issues in a non-traditional way.

Jesus, where have I been? I guess I'm out of the loop as I've haven't heard what "God has been doing in Canada". I didn't know God was in Canada. What is God doing in Canada anyway? Maybe he's come up here on vacation from the USA cottaging in the Muskokas or maybe mountain climbing in British Columbia. Thanks goes to Buckdog for bringing the Miracle Channel to this Canadian heathen's attention.

You may have read about the Miracle Channel in the news recently as co-founders and directors Dick and Joan Dewert have resigned their positions after the discovery and subsequent public airing of the good Pastor Dewert’s
extramarital affair
. Yes, it does look like Dick’s done at Miracle Channel. While claiming to have faith in God, it seems that pastors these days cannot claim to be faithful to their wives. Wasn’t it just a couple of months ago that we learned that a certain Mr. Haggard had a similar problem? Must be something in the holy water.

Anyway, the Miracle Channel is not without the usual fund raising controversy that tends to swirl around Evangelical ministries as this article suggests.

Hosts have told viewers to cash in their RRSPs, one of several on-air statements that prompted CRTC concerns. "There is somebody right now watching, and God is speaking to them about RRSPs," a host told viewers in 2004. "They've got RRSPs, and they've got a sizable amount, and it's a security thing. Well, it's not a security thing; your security is in God. And God's speaking to you to cash those in. And I dare you to do it."

I know that I posted a link to this a few days ago, but perhaps a good way to end this post is to review what Pat Condell has to say about televangelists soliciting money from their flock In Jesus' name.

Great post

We get the Miracle Channel from our Cable supplier whether we want it or not as part of their basic package.

It can be quite 'hokey' at times with the preachers breaking into insane blabbering that they claim is 'speaking in tongues'.

They have had guests like Stockwell Day on their little talk show segment and they love Harper's Conservative government.

This little scandal should slow them down somewhat.

Great post and thanks for the H/T!
