Linuxcaffe in Toronto Star

Today's Toronto Star has a good article about independent cafes in downtown Toronto. David Patrick and the Linuxcaffe are featured in the article which is titled Café campers. Too bad the author, Michele Henry, didn't get the name Linuxcaffe right.

XMMS Jukebox fun

A neat little feature added to the linuxcaffe.ca website, and you can have one too ;)

GPLv3 & GNU/Linux, or maybe Linux/GNU ???

From http://www.linuxjournal.com/node/1000111 with my comments interspersed:

Richard Stallman

"Now, what we didn't have 15 years ago was the threat of making the program effectively non free by technical restrictions placed around it. That's what Tivoisation is. Tivoisation means taking a free program and distributing a binary of it, and also providing the source, because the GPL requires that. But when the user changes the source code and compiles it and then tries to install the changed program he discovers that that's impossible because the machine is designed not to let him."

German Police seize TOR exit nodes

From tor.eff.org:

Tor is a toolset for a wide range of organizations and people that want to improve their safety and security on the Internet. Using Tor can help you anonymize web browsing and publishing, instant messaging, IRC, SSH, and other applications that use the TCP protocol. Tor also provides a platform on which software developers can build new applications with built-in anonymity, safety, and privacy features.

and the official word on the seizures:

Last week, a few Tor exit nodes were seized by the German police in a massive sting against child pornography. From our friends on the ground in Germany, we hear that dozens and dozens of other computers unrelated to Tor may have been seized too.

Not cool to whomever misplaced the last [edit:4] days worth of content

Something is going on with my host -- they've lost everything of mine from the last [edit:4] days -- email, files, posts, etc.

Not cool guys, the server upgrade was supposed to happen on Friday night and indeed it did. So why am I missing content that I posted yesterday 3 days after the upgrade? Argh...

Planet Linuxcaffe RSS Syndication

So I've setup an rss feed on http://linuxcaffe.ca from 5 or 6 of the various people on the mailing-list who I noticed have a website with a functional aggregator. You can view the html version on the linuxcaffe website itself here: www.linuxcaffe.ca/planet.

You can add the feed to your favourite akregator ;) program using this url: www.linuxcaffe.ca/planet-linuxcaffe-feed.

If you would like your feed added, contact us!

Once we reach a suitable number of incoming feeds from users, we'll break things down into specific categories and associated feeds, but for now, enjoy the raw jumble of xml goodness :)

gtalug.org 80x15 button

Tux is a little hard to scale down past 16x16, but if anyone wants to give it a shot, take a crack at a button here: lucazappa.com. Use google images to find a sufficiently small tux image.

Edit: made this one this morning -- I want it to show on the frontpage, so you'll excuse having it in two places in the full post...

LITP '06

Thanks to all who made it out and made Linux in the Park (LITP) '06 a successful and enjoyable afternoon (and evening). Who needs BarCamp when there is a giant 10' inflatable penguin involved? Especially one that matches the design spec that is freely available via the web (free-penguin.org).

As usual, click for a larger version.

United States cedes control of the internet - but what now? via theregister.co.uk

In a meeting that will go down in internet history, the United States government last night conceded that it can no longer expect to maintain its position as the ultimate authority over the internet.

Having been the internet's instigator and, since 1998, its voluntary taskmaster, the US government finally agreed to transition its control over not-for-profit internet overseeing organisation ICANN, making the organisation a more international body.
